The Hepialidae are a family of primitive moths that do not feed as adults. The larvae tend to spend a year or two under the soil, feeding on grass roots although some feed on bracken. The are 'honorary macros' - in other words they would be classified as micro-moths according to their place in the taxonomic tree but because they are large and easily distinguished they were 'promoted' to the macro-moths.
