Surrey, June 2010 Not easy to separate from downy emerald (q.v.) but the shape of the anal appendages on the male are different. If seen from the front, metallica has more yellow on the frons. It also has yellow on the side of the thorax (not visible here). This is a shy species and this individual was very flighty. It is the only time I've ever seen one perched. It flew around our garden pond for several minutes and then settled until I tried to get closer. The shot is taken using a 12x zoom, so is of moderate quality.
